Our friend Ben and Silence Dogood received a catalogue this weekend from a company called Spray-N-Grow, which is also the name of their original product, a micronutrient foliar spray. At first, we assumed from the name that it was a chemical company and were about to trash the catalogue when Silence pointed out their slogan, “Garden products that are safe for people, plants and pets.” Turns out, Spray-N-Grow was founded by a chemist who also happens to be a passionate organic gardener, and all the products in the catalog are organic.

Silence just posted the other day on cottage industries, and Spray-N-Grow is a classic success story in that vein. It started with a guy and an idea, eventually outgrew the family garage, and went on to become a successful family-owned company.

The description of Spray-N-Grow itself reminded us of SUPERthrive, a micronutrient solution that we add to the water we use on our houseplants. The thought of trying Spray-N-Grow as a foliar feed is tempting, so we thought we’d ask all of you: Have you ever used or do you use Spray-N-Grow? If so, what do you think of it? Let us know!

Probably wouldn’t use Spray-N-Grow, but then I’m a maniac environmentalist who believes that the right plant in the right place will grow well on its own. While not knowing the composition of the product, it sounds a little like compost tea, which one can make at home and is full of micronutrients. It might be good for those who don’t engage in composting. It might be good for vegetables.

Though I love biological science, I’m sometimes not sure about the commercialization of same. Perhaps that’s because I once worked in the retail nursery trade.

Hi Adrian! Thanks for your comments, and the plug for compost tea! It’s easy to make, free, and also helps control foliar diseases. I might try making “tea” from our earthworm compost, too, just to see how it does. As for working in retail, I hope you weren’t surrounded by chemical vapors all day long!

I got the catalog yesterday too, Ben. It’s tempting.. did you see that hibiscus?? Interesting that the nutrient is directed to the leaves and not the roots.

That hibiscus was amazing, Jen. Wow! I learned about the benefits of foliar feeding in grad school, so I know the science is sound. That’s why I was tempted to give Spray-N-Grow a try!
