Our beloved black German shepherd, Pioneer Hawk’s Haven Shiloh von Shiloh Special, turns three today, February 8. Happy birthday, Shiloh!

To celebrate, Silence Dogood is making a very special birthday “cake” for Shiloh, packed with flavor and the antioxidant goodness of blueberries and sweet potatoes (or pumpkin or carrots). I don’t think we’ll be joining her in eating it, but there’s no reason we (or you) couldn’t. Here’s the recipe:

                   Shiloh’s Blueberry Birthday “Cake”

2 cups cornmeal

1 cup cooked, pureed sweet potato, canned pumpkin (100% pumpkin, not pumpkin pie filling), or finely grated carrot

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 cup buttermilk

1 cup water

1 cup blueberries

3 tablespoons olive oil

1 egg, beaten

Rub a little oil around a square 8-by-8-inch cake or brownie pan to grease it. In a large bowl, mix all ingredients except blueberries thoroughly. Fold in blueberries gently so they don’t break, distributing them throughout the batter. Pour in the greased pan and bake at 400 degrees F. for 35-45 minutes until lightly browned. Cool, then cut into 1-inch cubes. Give one cube to each birthday dog and each of the celebrating canine party animals, if any. Just one per dog per day! Refrigerate the rest; they also freeze well.

Shiloh loves sweet potatoes, carrots, eggs, blueberries, pumpkin bread, and buttermilk, so we know she’ll enjoy her special birthday treat. Bet your dog would, too!
