Silence Dogood here. In general, I’m not a big fan of giveaway contests. That’s because I once read that you’re taxed at full value for anything you win. If you can’t afford that Caribbean vacation, it’s pretty likely that you can’t afford the tax on it, either. I look at the tempting contests that come my way—a vacation in Greece, a year’s free groceries—and sigh, and turn away.
But there’s finally a contest that I just couldn’t refuse. It’s Horticulture magazine’s Spring Fling Garden Giveaway, and you can sign up to win through May 9th. Since this is already May 3, you’d better get over there!
The reason I signed on for this one was the quality of the prizes. Our friend Ben and I have been lamenting the demise of our venerable garden bench all spring—one of its arms keeps falling off—and a garden bench from FifthRoom is one of the prizes. So are bulbs from Brent & Becky’s Bulbs. We know Brent and Becky, and we know their commitment to quality. We’d be beyond delighted to win some of their beautiful bulbs. Or, say, an EarthBox veggie planter. There are several other super prizes as well, but the most enticing for us is a greenhouse from Exaco. Okay, it’s just a little greenhouse, 6-by-6-feet, but imagine what you could do with that space!
Anyway, I suggest that you head over to Horticulture and check it out. (We get their e-mails automatically, and, techno-moron that I am, I couldn’t find a direct link to the contest. I’d suggest Googling “Horticulture Spring Fling Garden Giveaway” and seeing if that doesn’t take you there.) No doubt tax would be applied, but the tax would be reasonable and it looks like shipping is free, even for the greenhouse. If you love gardening, go for it! And if you win and we don’t, we’ll try not to hold it against you.
‘Til next time,
